We were interested in seeing IAGC Marine Debris & Ghost Net Initiative in the news.
In summary the report provides some mind blowing statistics.
- About 8 million tons of plastic enters the ocean each year.
- Studies found at least one million seabirds and one hundred thousand marine mammals die each year due to plastic pollution.
- Plastic pollution causes at least $13 billion in damage each year to the fishing, shipping and tourism industries.
- US West Coast states alone spend $500 million each year to clean this debris from their beaches.
